Sorry, I couldn't make out a more suitable forum. I wonder about the downloads available in VLSC and TechNet Subscriptions. I know they are almost identical.

I'd like to know, if I can e. Install the TechNet-version using the TechNet key, and later change to the VL-version using the VLK. Can I install the TechNet-versions using VLKs or do I have to download all files - wasting bandwidth and harming the environment!? Thank you for your support! It is always best to contact a trained Microsoft licensing specialist to ask questions about licensing - since you are asking about volume media, you can find resources. That said, here is my opinion. Volume media is different from TechNet media in the activation.

Volume media is set up to automatically search for a KMS so you never have to enter a key to activate it - unless you don't have a KVM in your environment. TechNet(may it rest in peace) and MSDN media are more like Retail media which requires the entry of an activation key.
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro Pack
A key is tailored to the particular media. That is, you cannot enter a Retail key into MSDN media nor can you enter MSDN keys in volume media. There are also differences in how they act when the activation period ends, but that has nothing to do with a key.
Using VAMT you can change MSDN media to volume activation, but I don't think there is any way to do the reverse - can't really think of any reason why one would want to. Remember that some of the restrictions that you deal with have to do with the licensing under which each type of media is purchased. Interesting - I have never heard that downloading an electronic copy of a product is harmful to the environment.:.:. Tim for 'KVM', this should read 'KMS' Don (Please take a moment to 'Vote as Helpful' and/or 'Mark as Answer', where applicable. OpenLicense MAKs can be used on VL media, TechNet Subscription MAKs can be used on TechNet media; I suppose the internal activation process is the same.
Beside not having to download almost identical images two times, the point is, that an testing server using TechNet-Keys might evolve into a productive server. There the replacement of the TechNet-Keys with VL-Keys is useful, if not legally mandatory. Well any useless use of resources, in this case electricity is harming the environment somehow. And using up useless disk space.
What about MAKs? OpenLicense MAKs can be used on VL media, TechNet Subscription MAKs can be used on TechNet media; I suppose the internal activation process is the same. In my experience, TechNet subscription and MSDN subscription, are both available via the Retail channel and also available via the VL channel. If you have a VL agreement you can purchase TN subs and/or MSDN subs via VL. If you purchase via Retail channel, the VL products may not be available to you, so the pkeys you are given are not MAK pkeys so will not work on VL media.
If you purchase via VL agreement, the VL channel products are available to you, so you can use your company MAK or KMS for these. Retail channel products need Retail pkeys, and Retail pkeys only activate to MS webservers (a little like MAK but Retail pkeys don't have many activations) Don (Please take a moment to 'Vote as Helpful' and/or 'Mark as Answer', where applicable.

Thank you all for your contributions! However, unfortunately none of them is an answer to the question. Meanwhile I made the following experiences:. Regarding Windows Server 2012 and / or Windows Server 2012 R2 I noticed the following difference: the TechNet-download (yes, it may requiescat in pace!) asks for a key during setup and I wasn't able to install it without a key.
The VL-download didn't ask at all, and the VL-key can be entered later. Unfortunately I currently cannot remember, if I could enter a VL key at the TechNet's prompt during setup. Furthermore I can't certainly remember, if the following was possible, but I think that I could use a TechNet-key for activating a VL-based installation; I think it didn't work using the GUI and instead I used slmgr.vbs /ipk #####-#####-#####-#####-##### and then slmgr.vbs /ato I'll keep you updated about further experiences! VL keys are actually available as generic keys on TechNet. Nothing special there. The 'specialness' of the volume media is that it already comes with a key as part of the distribution.
That's why you do not need a key with volume media. Basically, MSDN media is like retail media - it needs a key. Those keys are unique. But it is quite possible to convert retail media to volume media using the /ipk switch as you show above. But I don't think you can enter the VL key during the initial installation of retail media. It has to be done post-installation.: :.: :.
